General Thoughts
This album was a lot of fun to record in that I had a lot of different musicians going in and out of the studio all the time. I also got to do some things - like play keyboards and electric guitar- that I don't normally do. Hear Me only had a limited number of people working on it, and I wasn't really at the helm. On Lessons, however, I actually arranged many of the tracks myself, with a lot of very important contributions made by the engineer, Jeff Forrest. The musicians were also really incredible and came up with some great parts that I would never have thought of. I particularly remember Gary's part on ``Reddened Moon." I'd only asked him to come up with a solo, but he came in and wanted to try some things out he'd been working on. It was such a great part that there was no way I wasn't going to use it. That's just one of many examples of the phenomenal work that these top musicians did on that recording. There's quite a bit of variety on this album. I guess a lot of people like that, but I'm hoping that future projects have more continuity. Most of the songs fit in that neo-folk category that I keep harping on, though ``Heart Mind Strength Soul" is really more of a dance song than anything else. ``The Place" is a ballad with just me and the piano. The polished production tends to move the music into the pop category, though it still has a lot of those elements that I'm hoping to maintain these days.
Lessons in Reality was produced at Jeff's studio, Doubletime, located in Santee (in San Diego County).
