I don't know too much about Erick personally, but here's what I know:
Erick recently graduated from UCSD, with a BS in some science
(chemistry?). He's stoked to be done and, despite a full-time
job (lucky Erick!), I'm seeing lots more of him in the studio.
Erick answered an ad I put up looking for a drummer in September
of 1992. I needed someone
who was willing to set up a kit permanently in my studio, rehearse
and perform on (and put up with) compositions by many authors, and
also to allow other drummers to play on his kit. Obviously, that last
criterion is the hardest to fill.
Erick had just completed his stint with Foolish Mortals,
and mostly just needed a place to set up and practise. My situation
was perfect for him. We set up his kit and stored the cases in the rafters.
He's perfectly willing to let anyone that I decide isn't going to
damage his kit play on it, and that includes my 5-year-old daughter
and myself.
Once we got to recording, we noticed a lot of squeaks and clanks, so
we tightened up his kit. Now we are getting a very nice sound out
of it, and all we are using is Shure SM58s (four: one on snare, one
on each pair of mounted toms, and one on the floor tom), one Shure
SM57 (kick drum), and a Zildjian cymbal-micing system. All this gets
mixed down from six signals into a stereo mix, with a slight gated
reverb added to the snare. When the recordings become available,
they'll be in here, and you'll be able to check out the sound
we get with these humble settings.
Erick plays on many of the recordings, sharing his drum throne
with
Chester Abbott.
You can hear Erick on
Looking in the Mirror,
Reflections, and
I Don't Cry.
He'll be playing many of the upcoming recordings, including
Soulchaser,
the Mexico Song,
Valhalla,
and many more.
